The US Attorney Scandal May Be Widening

Talking Points Memo, of course, has got the latest details here and here. Most of this stuff they would have gotten away with if they kept the congress. The next two years are going to be very interesting to put it mildly.

That Statement Is No Longer Operative

WASHINGTON - The White House dropped its contention Friday that former Counsel Harriet Miers first raised the idea of firing U.S. attorneys, blaming "hazy memories" as e-mails shed new light on Karl Rove's role. Support eroded further for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Presidential press secretary Tony Snow previously had asserted Miers was the person who came up with the idea, but he said Friday, "I don't want to try to vouch for origination." He said, "At this juncture, people have hazy memories."

The White House also said it needed more time before deciding whether Miers, political strategist Rove and other presidential advisers would testify before Congress and whether the White House would release documents to lawmakers.

The White House also denied bombing Cambodia, firebombing the Brookings Institutions, and Tony Snow called Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist a known liar.

President Bush Unhappy About Attorney Firings

President Bush says the firings of several federal prosecutors was mishandled and that he's not happy about it

I have never accused the president of nuance, but this statement is chock full of it. I have charged the president of being full of it before. Does President Bush think it's a bad idea to fire US attorneys who were not doing political prosecutions for the benefit of the GOP? Does he think it's wrong to place Karl Rove's adie into a slot even though he has no real prosecutorial experience? Does he think that Gonzales needed to do a better job at controlling leaks?

Or does the President wish that his people did a better job in getting the MSM to ignore the reporting done by TalkingPointsMemo and handled the press better. Perhaps they could have killed or kidnapped an attractive blonde woman and said to the media, "look, something shiny over there".

I think we might need some more clarification.

Now it's apparent that President Bush, Harriet Miers and Alberto Gonzales as well as Pete Domenici were all well involved. Talking Points Memo has a round up of all the revelations.

A Thought About The US Attorney Firings

What if this is to run the clock out to January 2009 for statute of limitations on certain criminal acts? As CREW noted on January 11th of this year, bribery of a public official for example has only a five year statute limit. The new ethics bill increases it to eight years.

This isn't retro-active though. So, if the Bush regime fires prosecutors who might go after Republican crooks, and just wait out the next election, everything done before January 21, 2004 is unprosecutable. The date actually will go further. The new US attorneys will have to be sworn in, get staffs, and start investigations. This pushes the effective period of free corruption into the end of 2004. Any shenanigans related to the 2004 election are likely unprosecutable by a democratic administration that takes over because the clock is being run out.

Just a thought.

Bush’s New US Attorney a Criminal?

Read Greg Palast's story on Timothy Griffin. He is the Karl Rove opposition researcher who has been picked to replace the fired US attorney in Arkansas. Apparently he has been involved in vote suppression of minorities, which is illegal. Disgusting, but par for the course.

News From The Federal Attorney Firing Hearings

Pajama Pete Domenici called David Iglesias at home while Iglesias was in the bedroom with his wife to pressure him to get a political indictment. Think about the pressure. The Senator from the state where you have your job at the whim of the same party calls you at night, on your home phone number to give you a hint that you need to play ball on this, to get an indictment in the news before the November election. Domenici's call was the first call at home like this Iglesias got in 10 years. Pajama Pete directly asked if they could get an indictment down before November. Iglesias said no, and Domenici hung up on him.

There are no allegations that Domenici asked for oral sex though. So we should probably just let this one slide.
