According to the Hill, The "straight talker" almost defected to the Democrats in 2001, until he decided he liked the taste of Bush's kool-aid a bit better. It's battered political hack syndrome. Bush's operatives smeared McCain in 2000. McCain gets hurt, threatens to walk away, but instead comes back for more, and hires the people who smeared him.
He is a maverick though. The media keeps telling us that, so it must be true.
