You Thought Things Were Bad In Iraq?

Turkey's military asked the government Thursday to approve attacks on Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, signaling growing frustration over a lack of action against the guerrillas by Iraqi and U.S. forces.

Such action could put an overstretched U.S. military in the middle of a fight between two crucial partners, the Turks and the Iraqi Kurds. A recent surge in Kurdish attacks in southeastern Turkey has increased the pressure on Turkey's military to act.

``An operation into Iraq is necessary,'' Gen. Yasar Buyukanit told reporters.

It looks like things are about to get ten times worse. The kurds are a big part of the security forces that are attempting to pacify Baghdad. With Turkey just threatening to invade Kurdistan, this will draw those troops to abandon their posts and fight against Turkey. If Condi Rice and Bush can't prevent this from happening, the Kurds will do offensive counter-attacks into Turkish territory. Likely Turkey will win after they slaughter quite a lot of Kurds along the way. This will give the Sunni insurgents more breathing room and ability to create mischief. It will collapse the government of Iraq, because the Kurds will demand that the government protect them against Turkey, which they are impotent to do.

Of course, with higher amounts of attacks from Sunnis, this will either cause the Al-Sadr loyalists to retaliate more against the Sunnis, or perhaps they will join together in targeting Americans. Either way, things can get a whole lot bloodier because of Turkey's threatened stance. Does anybody feel safe knowing our leadership team is going to have to find a way out of this mess?

In other words, things are about to get fucked in a whole new terrifying way. We have no ability to do diplomacy because our leaders are stubborn, historically naive, and feckless. We are doomed.
