Heath Shuler Is A Coward
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
What part of that is confusing to you Shuler? Yes, this washed up former NFL quarterback is my congress critter. His congressional career has not even met his NFL standards. Once again, he submitted to the authority of Bush/Cheney/Gonzales rather than defend our constitution.
Read Glenn Greenwald about the vote last night. It is so tiring defending yellow bellied democrats that I will not bother. My congressman is a punk, a coward, and a weakling.

My congressman is terrified of Karl Rove and voted for the supplemental. The RNC is targeting Heath Shuler, who campaigned against the Iraq war.
Some football hero. He rolled over and played dead. Is this what you came to congress to do Heath? There will be another 1,000 dead american soldiers before Bush's surge gets it's time in the sun. I am sure proud that you and your fellow weasels decided to run afraid of Bush and Rove, and not stand up and say it's time to get out of Iraq.
You took the easy way out. Shame on you. You better be prepared to look into the eye of the family of any soldier from your district who loses a leg, an arm, or their life from this point forward and explain to them how you did the best you could.

He voted against the McGovern Amendment to redeploy out of Iraq. I accept that Shuler is a conservative democrat, and on issues such as abortion, stem cell research, he and I may not see eye to eye, and can respect the difference of opinion. He campaigned on stating that Iraq was a disaster. He owns part of this war now.
Karl Rove was in the district two weeks ago. Ads from astroturf groups have gone up against him. He is being a moral coward. I can't respect him for that.
Shuler like Lampson in TX, and Carney in PA are convinced that they can only hold onto their seats taken from corrupt Republicans by throwing so many bones to conservatives that they will choke on them. Does this strategy ever really pay off?
We shall see. Those voters excited to remove "Chainsaw" Charlie Taylor may not be as energized at the polls after Shuler has turned into a cynical politician after just a few months in DC.

This morning on a coffee run, I glanced at the cover of the local free right wing rag, and there was a picture of Karl Rove staring at me. Intrigued, I picked up a copy to learn that Turd Blossom himself would be speaking in my area in the glorious NC-11 district on April 28th, and the public is invited! Karl Rove is speaking at around 4 PM.
I will have a camera, a notepad, and be on my best behavior, until he is done prevaricating. What happens at fight club, stays at fight club after that though. He is likely to lie, because that is what he does, and the media attention will be scant, and under the radar since this is not happening in NY or DC, so your intrepid local blogger will be there. Anybody in the area who wants to take a glance at Satan, please come along too. The groundrules, yes there are groundrules, is that only local Republican muckity muck officials are allowed to vote, or ask the evil one questions. Failure to comply will obviously result in your dismissal.
The event will be held at West Hendersonville High School in Hendersonville. Here is a handy map.
Another point I want to make. This local right wing paper, the Asheville Tribune is terrible. It's not just the right wing views, which as a liberal of course, I support.It's their right to say any stupid thing they want to with their own ink. It's just the logic they employ. Part of the article is an attack piece on Heath Shuler for "lying" to the voters.
Here is a sample. It's not online, so I am just typing it out.
Shuler, in turn, is seen as vulnerable due to his liberal votes early in the 210th Congress. Shuler pleged to vote "mountain values," but critics say his votes look more like "Pelosi Politics".
Yeah, what critics? Some people say that this paper just made this crap up. Some people say they aren't even worthy of fishwrap. They continue with Shuler's high crimes and misdemeanors.
His first vote was to support Pelosi as Speaker of the House
How dare he. This is an outrage. A democratic congressman did not vote for John Boehner for speaker, but instead voted for the Majority Leader of his own party? Damn it. Just because every other member of the caucus voted for her, doesn't make it right that he joined in like a lemming. If I recall, one democrat voted against his own party in the speaker role in the 90's. Remember that crazy politician with a toupee from Ohio? James Trafficant is in prison at this moment for corruption, but still he had mountain, or Ohio values and bucked the trend of 99.9% of politicians from both parties. How dare Heath Shuler not follow his lead? Mountain values my ass.
Anyways, the right wing machine is gunning for Shuler. They are running ads against him up here already. The visit from Uncle Karl reinforces the idea that they consider Shuler vulnerable and are willing to spend big bucks to unseat him.
I am hoping that Karl Rove has a change of heart, denounces all his dirty tricks, decides to give his life over to Buddha. If not, I will be there to document the atrocities.

Driving this morning, I was listening to the radio when I heard the oddest ad. It was an attack ad against Democratic Representative Heath Shuler, for supporting "union bosses" against the will of the people. What was odd, was that it was airing during the Stephanie Miller Show on Air America radio affiliate 880 AM the Revolution. It was an obvious astroturf campaign just from the tone of the ad, and at the end it said it was sponsored by "The Coalition For A Democratic Workplace". Irony is one of the right-wings favorite tools when naming front groups.
Doing a bit of research, I learned that the spokesflack for the group is Todd Harris, who worked in communications for McCain 2002, and for Jeb Bush's re-election campaign in Florida in 2002. His lobbying firm DC Navigators is an all GOP shop.
The industry groups behind the ads are a consortium of those who hate unions. They helpfully provide a list at their website. What ticks me off about the campaign is the dishonesty of course. I respect the free exchange of ideas. This is not what they are attempting to do here. They have dishonest ads, a dishonest name, as if they are ashamed of what they are attempting. Of course they have a very good reason for doing so. Here is the ad they were running in Louisiana.
I would like to draw an analogy first. If you had a country where the top opposition leaders are ruled ineligble to vote, and people from another country are shipped in, allowed to vote before the election would the election be fair? That in a way is what is happening to unions today. Companies will fire union organizers on their staff, and when a union vote is about to occur, they will ship in employees from another unit, for the specific task of voting the union down.
What the card check does is simply say that when 50% plus one of the voters sign a card saying they want a union, there is a union. This astroturf campaign distorts this reality of course.
They say they are for democracy in the workplace. Anybody really believe that? They said on the radio today that Health Shuler was a big tool of union bosses, who hated the sacred right for voters to have privacy. They are liars.
We knew from the start that the entrenched corrupt Republican interests would try to attack vulnerable democratic freshmen. It is only April 2007, and large amounts of money are being spent to attack them, and make them even more weak to a challenge.
Because of this spirit of dishonesty exists, I encourage you to support these brave democrats who did the right thing in the face of the threatened attacks. I am not in any way involved with the Heath Shuler campaign. If you would like to give to another freshman instead, please do so.
