Playing Chicken With The Constitution
"Al-Qaida is not going on vacation this month," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "And we can't either until we know we've done our duty to the American people."
"I hope that there are no attacks before we are able to effectively update this important act," said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.
This boils down the "debate" on passing Bush's new power grab quite effectively. The democrats are once again being asked to stand up for civil liberties and our constitutional freedoms in the face of taunts by the GOP.
Terrorists might atttack us. If it happens and you refuse to pee on the constitution, we are going to blame you for it is what the Republicans are saying. This is an especially good reason not to play along. This argument can never be won on these ground rules.
Allow us to put a spy camera in every single car. If you don't Al Qaeda might win. Allow us to search every American's home without a warrant. If an attack occurs that we could have prevented by this, guess who is at fault?
The cowardly response by Democrats is as alarming as the gleeful destruction of our liberties by the Republicans. The GOP sounds like they want an attack against us just to score some political points.
The democrats will once again cave, just like they did when being afraid to look weak on a vote to authorize force against Iraq. They never learn their lessons.
