Using a large vocabulary is swell when speaking to a niche audience that comprehends these terms, and when the words can not simply be substituted for more common language.
George Will on the other hand uses words as a shield to stop criticism of the nature of his ideas, and as an intimidation tool. How dare I the common person criticize somebody with such a vocabulary? His thought processes appear to be flawed, but he sure does talk pretty.
Dennis Miller is another great example of this phenomena. For a while audiences often laughed along with his tortured cultured references, terrified to let others think they didn't "get it". When he turned into a Bush worshiping sycophant, the magic was gone.
George Will hasn't had any magic for years. Read his column for yourself. It's crap.
