Dinesh D'Souza decides to take the lowest ground on the Virginia Tech shooting by saying that people apparently know God exists when bad things happen, because they are all praying to him.
Notice something interesting about the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings? Atheists are nowhere to be found. Every time there is a public gathering there is talk of God and divine mercy and spiritual healing. Even secular people like the poet Nikki Giovanni use language that is heavily drenched with religious symbolism and meaning.
The atheist writer Richard Dawkins has observed that according to the findings of modern science, the universe has all the properties of a system that is utterly devoid of meaning. To no one's surprise, Dawkins has not been invited to speak to the grieving Virginia Tech community.
I haven't blogged much about the VT shooting, but for this I must. If this happened in New Dehli would people be praying to Shiva, therefore Shiva exists? If it happened in Saudi Arabia, they would be praying to Allah. So apparently, the existence of a particular God is only proved when really bad things happen to people who believe in that particular diety.
That being said, I will tell D'Souza where the atheists are this week. A lot of mental health professionals are agnostic or atheists. The people who are giving therapy to those who are grieving are doing so quietly without hogging television cameras. That is what they are doing Dinesh. Atheists could be making points on the non existence of God because of all the crappy things that go on in the world, and be using this tragedy as a way to humiliate their opponents. They aren't.
I am no Keith Olbermann, but you sir are the worst person in the world. Whatever God does or does not exist would not very likely approve of your using this horrific occurance as a way to mock people of no faith. Instead, you could quietly give money, donate time, blood, and pray quietly in your closet.
You chose to write an offensive column instead. Go to hell (if it exists).
