The UK is bottom of a league table for child well-being across 21 industrial countries, charity Unicef has said.
The study looked at 40 indicators including poverty, relationships with parents, health and safety, behaviour, and children's own sense of well-being.
The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Finland headed the list, with the UK in last place just behind the US. The Children's Society described the findings as "shocking" and said the UK was failing children.
Well, as an American, may I give congrats to Tony Blair. He has turned the Labor Party into shambles, he is being questioned by police perhaps for the third time in the peerage for cash scandal, is still wrestling with Barney as being George W. Bush's favorite pet canine, and now he leads the UK into being a very crappy environment to raise kids, topping (bottoming) the USA in this survey. Poland came in 14th place (I didn't forget Poland).
It kind of reminds me of here in the states when Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana all compete to see who won't be in last place in these kind of competitions. There is always the bragging rights inherent in coming in 48th, or 49th place.
Today though, we can proudly tell our former colonial overlords that we are #20, you pikers.
