SYDNEY -- While insisting that the U.S. is committed to seeking a diplomatic solution to Iran's apparent pursuit of nuclear weapons, Vice President Dick Cheney said Saturday that military options are still available.
"All options are on the table," Cheney said during a news conference alongside Australian Prime Minister John Howard, a staunch U.S. ally.
All joking aside, and this is literally a joke, I have a question. How can we prefer diplomacy when we refuse to talk to Iran? Seriously. Does not one reporter have the guts to ask Cheney something along those lines? For thousands of years, countries who have been enemies have tried to avoid war by the use of diplomacy. Diplomats have been trained to not be offensive and to attempt conflict resolution. Bush and Cheney seem to think they have created a new paradigm where diplomacy means not talking to your enemy directly, but demanding that they do what you want in public, threatening to bomb them otherwise.
